Udupi DC Urges Unorganised Workers to Enroll in Central Pension Schemes
Udupi DC Urges Workers to Join Central Pension Schemes

In a significant push for social security, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK has made a strong appeal to workers in the unorganised sector, traders, and self-employed individuals to enroll in the central government's pension schemes. This initiative aims to ensure robust financial and social security during their old age, addressing a critical need for this segment of the workforce.

Special Registration Drive Launched in Udupi

Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK presided over a crucial meeting at Rajathadri, Manipal, on Thursday, focusing on the implementation of a special registration drive. This campaign is specifically designed to enroll unorganised workers under two key government schemes: the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan and the National Pension Scheme for Traders and Self Employed Persons Yojana. The DC emphasized that these ambitious schemes are central government initiatives launched to provide a safety net for those in the unorganised sector, and she called upon all eligible persons to register without delay.

Campaign Details and Eligibility Criteria

The special registration campaign is being conducted across the Udupi district from January 15 to March 15, offering a window for workers to secure their future. Under these schemes, beneficiaries are required to contribute a monthly amount that ranges from Rs 55 to Rs 200, depending on their age. In return, they will receive a monthly pension of Rs 3,000 after attaining 60 years of age, providing a steady income stream in retirement.

However, Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK clarified certain eligibility restrictions. Income tax payers and beneficiaries of existing schemes such as ESI (Employees' State Insurance), EPF (Employees' Provident Fund), and NPS (National Pension System) are not eligible to enroll under these new pension schemes. This ensures that the benefits are targeted towards those who lack formal social security coverage.

Registration Process and Awareness Efforts

To facilitate enrollment, unorganised workers aged between 18 and 40 years can register at nearby Common Service Centres (CSCs). The registration process requires submitting essential documents, including an Aadhaar card, an Aadhaar-linked mobile number, a bank passbook, and the first month's contribution. This streamlined approach is designed to make the process accessible and hassle-free for workers.

In a bid to maximise enrolment during the special campaign, Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa TK has directed officials to organise extensive awareness camps. These camps will be held in areas with a high concentration of unorganised workers and at gatherings where workers typically assemble. The goal is to spread information about the schemes, highlight their benefits, and encourage widespread participation, ensuring that no eligible individual is left behind in securing their financial future.
