Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt Invests Rs 60 Lakh in Biogas Plant to Combat LPG Shortage

In response to a nationwide LPG shortage exacerbated by the West Asia crisis, the Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt has embarked on an ambitious project to establish a biogas plant at an estimated cost of Rs 60 lakh. This initiative is designed to meet the cooking gas requirements of its extensive kitchen operations, ensuring uninterrupted food services for devotees and visitors.

Strategic Planning and Modern Implementation

The project was originally conceived during the tenure of Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Sri Puttige Mutt. Now, under the guidance of Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Shiroor Mutt, construction is actively progressing. The new unit will leverage modern technology to create a well-equipped facility that addresses both energy needs and environmental concerns.

Sustainable Waste Management and Energy Production

The biogas plant will utilize organic waste from the Mutt's bhojana shalas (dining halls) and kitchens, along with cow dung sourced from the gau shala (cattle shelter). This approach not only provides a permanent solution to waste disposal issues but also promotes the use of green energy. Additionally, the process will generate nutrient-rich manure for the Mutt's gardens and agricultural fields, enhancing sustainability.

Shiroor Mutt Diwan Uday Kumar Saralathaya emphasized the Mutt's commitment to cleanliness and environmental stewardship. He stated, "A well-equipped biogas unit is being initiated as a permanent solution to waste disposal issues and to promote green energy. Despite the current shortage of cooking gas, we are managing food arrangements using firewood. In the coming days, this establishment can achieve energy self-sufficiency through biogas."

Technical Specifications and Daily Operations

A Chitradurga-based company is responsible for setting up the 50-cubic-metre plant, located near the gau shala which houses over 80 cattle. Daily inputs will include approximately 750 litres of cow dung and an average of 750kg of wet kitchen waste. This feedstock is expected to produce about 30–40kg of biogas per day, significantly reducing reliance on traditional LPG.

Enhancing Capacity with New Boiler Systems

In a related development, a new boiler system essential for daily anna daana (food charity) was inaugurated on Thursday by Sri Vedavardhana Tirtha Swami. He highlighted that eight new steam boilers installed in the kitchen can cook for 30,000 to 50,000 people daily. These boilers not only boost operational capacity but also contribute to environmental protection by utilizing efficient, cleaner energy sources.

This comprehensive initiative underscores the Mutt's proactive approach to overcoming energy challenges while advancing its mission of sustainability and community service.
