The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Friday that it has procured 6.10 lakh metric tonnes of wheat and disbursed Rs 1,318 crore to 115,854 farmers across the state by the end of April. A state government spokesperson confirmed that arrangements at procurement centres have been significantly strengthened to ensure smooth operations.
Streamlined Processes for Farmers
The processes for weighing, storage, and payment have been streamlined and made transparent to ensure that farmers face no difficulties while selling their produce. Officials have been issued clear directives to ensure adequate resources are available at every centre and that no farmer is turned away.
Exceptional Performance in Purvanchal
The state government highlighted that districts in the Purvanchal region have delivered exceptional performance in wheat procurement. Deoria secured the top spot in the state with a procurement rate of 55.82%. Other districts such as Basti, Pratapgarh, Balrampur, and Sant Kabir Nagar are also making significant progress. Improved management and a transparent system have bolstered farmers' confidence.
Relief for Rain-Affected Wheat
Unseasonal rains this season adversely affected wheat crop quality, causing grains to become shrivelled and lose natural lustre. In response, the central government granted permission to procure wheat with up to 70% loss of lustre and up to 20% shrivelled or broken grains without any price cuts, shielding farmers from financial losses.
Digitised Payment System
The entire process, from initial registration to final payment, has been digitised. Farmers can register easily and receive payments directly into their bank accounts. The spokesperson added that by strengthening the monitoring mechanism, steps are being taken to ensure maximum farmers benefit from the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
