The Uttar Pradesh government declared on Wednesday that it has positioned farmers and villages as the central pillars of the state's economic roadmap. A government spokesperson emphasized that the nine-year tenure under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been dedicated to narrowing the urban-rural divide and reducing migration by bolstering rural infrastructure and farm-based livelihoods.
Budget 2026-27 Reinforces Agricultural Focus
In the Budget for 2026–27, agriculture and rural development received significant renewed emphasis, with an allocation of Rs 10,888 crore for agricultural schemes. This represents a substantial 20% increase over the previous year's funding. The provisions are strategically designed to modernize farming practices, expand rural infrastructure, promote agri-entrepreneurship, and integrate farmers with new technologies and markets.
The budget also strengthens initiatives for natural and sustainable farming practices, reflecting a commitment to environmentally friendly agricultural methods.
Major Initiatives Since 2017
The spokesperson highlighted that since 2017, several major initiatives have been implemented to enhance farmers' financial security. The government claims record sugarcane payments exceeding Rs 3.04 lakh crore during this period, underscoring its efforts to support the agricultural community.
Farmer Leader Endorses Government Approach
Ravindra Kumar Singh, a farmer leader from Azamgarh, praised the government's policies for positioning farmers as active stakeholders in the state's growth. He stated, "For inclusive development, it is essential that those engaged in agriculture and allied sectors are not merely beneficiaries of subsidies but equal partners in economic progress. This approach effectively bridges the urban-rural divide and helps curb migration."
