Uttar Pradesh Government Revolutionizes Wheat Procurement with Doorstep Initiative
In a significant move to empower agricultural communities, the Uttar Pradesh state government has launched an innovative doorstep wheat procurement program. This initiative is designed to ensure farmers receive remunerative prices for their harvests while completely bypassing traditional middlemen who often reduce profit margins.
Mobile Procurement Centers Transform Agricultural Logistics
The groundbreaking program utilizes mobile procurement centers that travel directly to villages, lifting wheat from farmers' doorsteps. This approach provides dual benefits: eliminating transportation costs that previously burdened farmers and removing delays that characterized conventional procurement methods. Payments are seamlessly transferred directly to farmers' bank accounts through a streamlined digital system.
Raju Patel, the Divisional Food Marketing Controller for Prayagraj, revealed ambitious procurement targets for the current season. "We have established a procurement target of 1,14,500 metric tonnes for the Prayagraj division this agricultural season," Patel confirmed. The initiative has already demonstrated impressive results during its initial implementation phase.
Impressive Early Results Across Four Districts
Between April 1 and April 8, procurement teams have successfully collected 3,132 metric tonnes of wheat across the four districts comprising the Prayagraj division. The distribution breakdown reveals:
- Prayagraj district: 1,562 metric tonnes procured
- Pratapgarh district: 925 metric tonnes procured
- Kaushambi district: 532 metric tonnes procured
- Fatehpur district: 113 metric tonnes procured
To achieve the comprehensive procurement target, authorities have established 281 procurement centers throughout the division. Officials have issued strict instructions to all center in-charges to ensure procurement targets are met, with the entire process undergoing close monitoring at multiple administrative levels.
Enhanced Procurement Policy and Mobile Innovation
Government officials explained that several strategic changes have been implemented in this year's procurement policy, building upon last year's successful model. The revised approach combines traditional fixed procurement centers with innovative mobile units specifically designed to reach farmers in remote and underserved areas.
"For the first time in our procurement history, we have deployed 35 mobile vans operating round-the-clock across the division," Patel emphasized. "These mobile units are collecting wheat through comprehensive door-to-door operations, ensuring no farmer is left behind due to geographical constraints."
Financial Benefits and Streamlined Procedures
The Central Government has established the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat at Rs 2,585 per quintal for the Rabi marketing season 2026–27. This represents a substantial increase of Rs 160 compared to the previous year's rate, providing enhanced financial security for agricultural producers.
To guarantee timely payments, the department has implemented an efficient system where sale proceeds are transferred to farmers' Aadhaar-linked bank accounts within 48 hours through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS). Additionally, farmers selling more than 100 quintals of wheat have been exempted from production verification requirements, significantly simplifying the documentation process.
This comprehensive procurement initiative represents a paradigm shift in agricultural marketing, combining technological innovation with administrative efficiency to directly benefit farming communities across Uttar Pradesh.
