CM Yogi Adityanath Reviews Progress of Metro Rail Projects in Uttar Pradesh

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a comprehensive review of Metro rail projects across Uttar Pradesh on Monday, focusing on ensuring timely completion while maintaining stringent quality standards. The CM underscored the critical importance of efficiency and transparency in all project operations, directing Metro rail corporations and relevant departments to hold regular coordination meetings to streamline efforts.

Emphasis on Financial Viability and Revenue Enhancement

During the review, Adityanath highlighted the need to improve the financial sustainability of Metro projects by developing additional revenue streams. Officials were instructed to actively promote commercial activities at Metro stations and depots, including the establishment of retail outlets, food courts, parking facilities, and office spaces. The goal is to maximize non-fare revenue through strategic advertising, branding initiatives, and optimal utilization of Metro-owned land and assets.

Strengthening Multimodal and Last-Mile Connectivity

The Chief Minister stressed the necessity of enhancing multimodal connectivity and last-mile solutions to provide seamless travel experiences for commuters. Key focus areas include integrating Metro services with city buses, e-rickshaws, taxis, and app-based transport services. Development of feeder routes and expanded parking facilities was also emphasized to ensure efficient and convenient access for passengers.

Current Status and Future Targets of Metro Projects

Officials provided detailed updates on the progress of Metro projects in major cities:

  • Lucknow Metro: The 23-kilometer corridor is fully operational. The proposed Charbagh–Vasant Kunj extension, spanning approximately 11.16 kilometers, is targeted for completion by 2030.
  • Kanpur Metro: Out of the total 32.4-kilometer network, about 15 kilometers have been commissioned. The remaining sections are likely to be completed by March 2027.
  • Agra Metro: Operations are currently underway on a priority stretch of around 6.5 kilometers within the 29.4-kilometer project. Corridor-1 is scheduled for completion by June 2026, while Corridor-2 is expected to be finished by next year.

Positive Impact and Revenue Performance

Metro ridership has shown a steady increase in Lucknow, Kanpur, and Agra, contributing to reduced road congestion and improved urban mobility. In terms of financial performance, non-fare revenue generated from advertising and commercial activities reached approximately Rs 222 crore during the 2024–25 fiscal year, demonstrating the effectiveness of revenue diversification strategies.

The review meeting concluded with a reinforced commitment to advancing Metro infrastructure as a cornerstone of Uttar Pradesh's urban development, aligning with broader goals of sustainable transportation and economic growth.
