Ten Security Personnel Injured in Multiple Maoist IED Blasts During Anti-Naxal Operation in Bijapur

In a significant incident highlighting the persistent threat of Left Wing Extremism, ten security personnel sustained injuries in several pressure IED (Improvised Explosive Device) blasts triggered by Maoists. The explosions occurred during an anti-Naxal operation in the dense, forested surroundings of the Karegutta hills within Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Sunday.

Details of the Injured and Evacuation Efforts

Among the injured, nine personnel belong to the District Reserve Guard (DRG), while one is from the specialized CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) force. Following the blasts, all ten were airlifted to Raipur for advanced medical treatment. Officials have confirmed that their condition is currently stable.

The incident took place in the Usoor region, a known Maoist-affected zone, as security forces were conducting a search operation. According to a CRPF officer, the patrol inadvertently triggered the improvised explosive devices that had been planted by Maoist insurgents. Evacuating the wounded proved challenging due to the dense and difficult terrain, causing delays. Initially, the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for first aid before being referred to Raipur after receiving primary treatment.

Intensified Security Measures and Ongoing Operations

In response to the attack, security forces have intensified search and area domination operations in and around the Karregutta hill area. This region is recognized as a known Maoist transit and hideout zone along the inter-state border. Police authorities have deployed additional forces and raised alert levels to prevent any further incidents. Officials stated that the operation is continuing, with further details to be shared as the situation evolves.

The Persistent Threat of IEDs in Bastar Region

Inspector General of Police for the Bastar range, P Sundarraj, emphasized that detecting and defusing IEDs remains a top priority for security forces. He noted that in 2025, a record 875 IEDs were destroyed based on intelligence from surrendered cadres and demining operations. This incident underscores the ongoing danger, as just two days prior, a youth in Bijapur suffered a severe ankle injury from an IED blast and had to limp seven kilometers to a health center with villagers' assistance.

The IEDs continue to pose one of the biggest threats across the Bastar region, serving as the most dangerous indigenous weapon used by Maoists. These devices do not discriminate, posing risks to villagers, children, livestock, and security personnel alike. The situation highlights the complex challenges faced in counter-insurgency operations in Chhattisgarh's remote forested areas.
