Eleven people have been booked by the Mangaluru police for allegedly gheraoing Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader at Kuthar junction on Tuesday. The incident took place when Khader was returning from a program in the area. The accused, residents of Kuthar and surrounding regions, surrounded his vehicle and demanded the construction of a circle at the junction to address traffic issues.
Details of the Incident
The police registered a case against the individuals under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint), and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty) of the Indian Penal Code. The accused reportedly shouted slogans and prevented Khader's vehicle from moving for several minutes. Khader assured them that he would look into the matter, after which the crowd dispersed.
Background of the Demand
The Kuthar junction, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru, has been a hotspot for traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Residents have been demanding a traffic circle to regulate vehicle movement and reduce accidents. Despite multiple representations to the local authorities, no action has been taken, leading to frustration among the locals.
This is not the first time that public figures have been gheraoed in the region over infrastructure issues. Earlier this year, a similar protest was held outside the office of the Mangaluru City Corporation demanding road repairs.
Police Action and Investigation
The Mangaluru police have initiated an investigation and are probing the identities of all those involved. The accused have been identified based on video footage and witness statements. Further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses. The police have urged the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to use proper channels to voice their grievances.
Reactions from Officials
Speaker U T Khader later stated that he understands the concerns of the residents and assured them that the matter would be taken up with the concerned department. He appealed for patience and urged the people to follow legal procedures. Meanwhile, local leaders from various political parties have condemned the incident, calling it an attack on democratic values.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with many supporting the residents' demand for better infrastructure while criticizing the method of protest. The police have advised citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid such confrontations in the future.
