Meghalaya Police Arrest 12 in Tura Violence, Heighten Security for GHADC Polls
In a significant development, police in Meghalaya have arrested 12 people in connection with a series of violent incidents, including arsons, looting, and disruption of public order in Tura. Abraham T Sangma, the Superintendent of Police for West Garo Hills district, confirmed the arrests, stating, "We have arrested 12 people so far in connection with the violence at Tura alone. We are still on the lookout for more involved in the recent violent acts." He emphasized that while the situation is currently under control, security personnel remain on high alert to thwart any potential mischief. This proactive stance underscores the police's commitment to maintaining law and order during this sensitive period.
Administrative Measures to Ensure Stability
To bolster security, various district administrations have implemented stringent measures. Vibhor Aggarwal, the district magistrate of West Garo Hills, reassured the public that "The situation in Tura is under control." Meanwhile, in East Garo Hills, district magistrate RP Marak has ordered the complete closure of the main market in headquarters Williamnagar until further notice. All vegetable vendors have been directed to relocate to alternative sites within the town to minimize disruptions.
In South West Garo Hills, district magistrate Anendya Raajsshre issued an immediate prohibition on the sale of petrol and diesel in jerry cans, bottles, and other containers. This precautionary step is aimed at preventing any potential escalation of tensions linked to the GHADC elections, reflecting the administration's vigilance in safeguarding public safety.
