In a significant and wide-ranging security initiative, Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken more than 1,500 people into custody for questioning. This large-scale operation, now in its third day, was launched following specific intelligence about attempts to disrupt the region's hard-earned peace.
A Pre-emptive Strike Against Militant Networks
According to senior police officials, the operation is a direct pre-emptive strike based on credible inputs. The primary objective is to systematically dismantle the support structures that sustain militant activities in the Valley. A key police officer explained that the aim is to keep militants and their sympathisers in check by keeping them under constant pressure, a strategy that has proven effective in the past.
The operation is unfolding simultaneously across all districts of Kashmir. Police sources indicate that the main targets are young men with established links to militant outfits, known militant sympathisers, and family members of militants who are currently based in Pakistan.
Scope and Legal Framework of the Operation
A senior officer detailed the categories of individuals being focused on, stating, "The main targets are the people who had a terror background, their sympathisers, former OGWs (Over Ground Workers) and people who have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, but are out on bail."
During the searches, authorities are meticulously checking for any incriminating materials, digital devices, and other items that could be used to provide logistical or other support to militant groups. The Anantnag police reported that their searches were conducted peacefully and concluded without the recovery of any illicit or incriminating material.
The J&K Police has reiterated that the operation is being conducted in strict accordance with due legal procedures and under proper authorisation. They affirmed their firm commitment to taking stern action against any individuals or groups involved in activities deemed detrimental to national security and public peace.
