A devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the Vasar village area of Kalyan-Dombivli, where a 2-year-old boy lost his life after being run over by a garbage collection vehicle operated by a contractor of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). The accident took place around 7 am as the child was returning home with his father.
Details of the Accident
According to Senior Inspector Sandeep Shivale of the Hill Line police station, the boy was walking with his father when a passing van struck him. The impact was so severe that the child died instantly. The tragic event led to a large crowd gathering at the scene, with residents expressing their anger and grief.
Residents' Complaints
Local residents alleged that reckless and negligent driving by the contractor's refuse-laden vehicles has been a recurring issue. They demanded immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future. The police have responded by booking the driver of the vehicle, and an investigation is underway.
Municipal Response
Additional Municipal Commissioner of KDMC, Harshal Gaikwad, informed TOI that an independent inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the mishap. He assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, especially for heavy vehicles operating in residential areas. The police are examining all aspects of the case, including the driver's record and the vehicle's condition.
