In a significant development, the Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate has apprehended 26 individuals in connection with the brick-batting and vandalism that took place at the Jahangiri Mohalla police outpost. Following their production in court on Sunday, seven of the accused have been remanded to police custody, while the remaining 19 have been sent to judicial custody, as reported by Mohammad Asif.
CM's Stern Warning
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari issued a strong warning on Saturday, stating, "Those who were involved in vandalising the police outpost are in police custody. Not only will they face prosecution, the cost of damaging public property will be realised from them." This underscores the government's zero-tolerance approach towards such acts of violence and property damage.
Identification Through CCTV
ADCP Dhruba Das confirmed that the accused were identified through CCTV footage captured during the attack on the police outpost. The use of surveillance technology played a crucial role in swiftly nabbing the perpetrators.
Sequence of Events
The tension erupted on Friday at Qureshi Mohalla after rumours spread that police had ordered the removal of a mosque loudspeaker. Agitated locals ransacked the outpost, leading to a violent confrontation. In response, police and central forces resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas shelling to disperse the mob and restore order.
The incident highlights the fragile communal harmony in the region and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining peace. The police have assured that further investigations are underway to identify any additional suspects involved in the attack.
