₹2.97Cr Ambergris Seized in Rajkot, 3 Arrested

In a significant blow to the illegal wildlife trade, Rajkot police have intercepted a massive consignment of ambergris - often called 'floating gold' - worth a staggering ₹2.97 crore in the international market. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals involved in this prohibited trade.

The Multi-Crore Seizure

Acting on precise intelligence, the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Rajkot Taluka police conducted a coordinated raid that resulted in the confiscation of 2.97 kilograms of high-quality ambergris. This rare substance, produced in the digestive system of sperm whales, commands astronomical prices in international markets, particularly for its use in luxury perfumes.

Three Arrests Made in Coordinated Operation

Police have taken into custody three key suspects identified as Arif Abdul Majid Sumra, Sajid Abdul Majid Sumra, and Imran Yusuf Sumra. The arrests followed careful surveillance and intelligence gathering about their involvement in the illegal ambergris trade network operating in the region.

What Makes Ambergris So Valuable?

Often referred to as 'whale vomit' or 'floating gold,' ambergris develops as a secretion in the intestines of sperm whales. When freshly produced, it possesses a foul odor, but as it ages and oxidizes in seawater, it develops a sweet, earthy scent highly prized by perfumers.

The substance serves as a fixative in luxury fragrances, helping scents last longer on the skin. This unique property makes it incredibly valuable in the global perfume industry, despite the existence of synthetic alternatives.

Legal Status in India

In India, ambergris trade falls under strict prohibition. The substance is classified as a wildlife derivative under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, making its possession, trade, or sale completely illegal. Sperm whales, the source of ambergris, are protected under Schedule I of the same act, granting them the highest level of protection.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the entire supply chain and identify potential international connections. The seizure represents one of the significant ambergris busts in Gujarat recently, highlighting the persistent challenge of wildlife crime in the region.

Police officials have indicated that the investigation will focus on determining the origin of the confiscated ambergris and identifying other individuals involved in this illegal trade network that threatens protected marine species.
