In a major move to ensure safety and order, the iconic Puri Jagannath Temple in Odisha has been placed under an extensive network of closed-circuit television cameras ahead of the anticipated New Year rush. This comprehensive security upgrade aims to facilitate smooth crowd management and prevent any untoward incidents as nearly three lakh devotees are expected to visit the shrine on January 1.
Massive Surveillance and Police Deployment
The temple administration, in close coordination with the Puri police, has strategically installed a total of 344 CCTV cameras across the premises. According to Puri Superintendent of Police Prateek Singh, 152 cameras have been placed inside the temple complex, while 192 cameras monitor the areas outside. This surveillance network is designed to keep a vigilant eye on crowd movement and traffic flow in real-time.
Supporting this technological shield is a substantial ground force. The authorities have deployed 70 platoons of police personnel to maintain law and order. SP Singh emphasized that the entire security arrangement is now a foolproof CCTV surveillance system, crafted to address the formidable challenge of managing the massive influx of visitors that has previously led to chaos during festive occasions.
A Comprehensive Crowd Control Plan
The police have formulated a detailed strategy to ensure a hassle-free and safe experience for all devotees. Safety and smooth darshan remain the top priorities. Singh stated that the force is ready with a comprehensive crowd control plan for both the interior and exterior of the temple. Field officers have been instructed to adopt a meticulous approach in its execution.
Key measures include frisking devotees at entry points for security reasons. Coordination with local administration and temple authorities will focus on streamlining entry and exit points, regulating queues effectively, and ensuring that medical facilities are readily accessible. Senior officers have also been tasked with preparing contingency plans to tackle potential emergencies like stampedes or natural hazards.
Beach Vigilance and Emergency Readiness
Security vigilance will extend beyond the temple to the popular Puri beach, which attracts thousands of tourists during the festive period. Additional police personnel and lifeguards will be deployed along the coastline to ensure the safety of visitors.
Fire and emergency services are on high alert as well. Chief Fire Officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi confirmed that adequate firefighters, rescue teams, and a command control vehicle have been mobilized in Puri. Furthermore, divers and approximately 300 private lifeguards have been pressed into service specifically for the beach area, creating a multi-layered safety net for the New Year celebrations.
