4kg Ganja Seized at Ernakulam Station in Election Crackdown

Major Drug Bust at Ernakulam Railway Station Ahead of Kerala Elections

In a significant crackdown on illegal narcotics, authorities in Kochi seized four kilograms of ganja from Ernakulam Town railway station on Friday. The operation was a coordinated effort involving crime intelligence units from Thiruvananthapuram, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from Ernakulam North, and excise enforcement officials from Ernakulam.

Discovery of Hidden Cannabis

After the Visakhapatnam Weekly Express departed from the station, officials discovered the cannabis concealed inside a computer CPU within a bag left under a bench on the second platform. The illicit substance, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs two lakh, was reportedly intended for sale among migrant workers in the region.

According to RPF officials, it is believed that the individual transporting the cannabis abandoned the bag upon spotting police presence on the platform, leading to the seizure without any immediate arrests.

Intensified Inspections Linked to Assembly Elections

This operation is part of a broader initiative under the special instructions of RPF divisional security commissioner Mohammed Hanif, aimed at maintaining law and order in connection with the upcoming assembly elections. The joint inspections are being conducted rigorously across railway stations to prevent illegal activities and ensure public safety during the electoral period.

In a related development, as part of these special inspections conducted in March, the RPF successfully seized 50kg of cannabis along the railway stretch between Thrissur and Kottayam, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in Kerala.

Impact and Ongoing Efforts

The seizure underscores the heightened vigilance by law enforcement agencies in Kerala as the state prepares for assembly elections. Authorities have emphasized that such operations will continue to target drug smuggling and other illicit trades to safeguard communities and uphold electoral integrity.

This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by drug trafficking and the proactive measures being taken by police and excise departments to address them, particularly in high-traffic areas like railway stations.
