5-Year Jail for Mobile Snatching in Ludhiana

A court in Ludhiana has delivered a stern verdict, sentencing a young man to five years of rigorous imprisonment for snatching a mobile phone from a resident. This case highlights the serious legal consequences of street crime in the city.

The Court's Verdict and Punishment

Additional Sessions Judge and Fast Track Court Judge Sandeep Singh Bajwa pronounced the sentence, which includes not only the five-year prison term but also a fine of Rs 10,000. The court made it clear that failure to pay this fine would result in an additional five months of rigorous imprisonment for the convict, identified as Tarun from Shivpuri.

Details of the Snatching Incident

The crime dates back to June 13, 2018. According to the prosecution, the complainant, Vijay Kumar, was walking from the main road towards a liquor vend in Chitti Kothi, Jaswant Nagar, near Bindra Colony. He was talking on his mobile phone when two youths on a motorcycle approached him from behind.

The pillion rider pushed Vijay Kumar and snatched his mobile phone. The duo then attempted to speed away on their motorcycle. However, the victim immediately raised an alarm, prompting several bystanders to chase the fleeing suspects.

The Dramatic Capture

Justice was swift that day. A short distance away, the motorcycle hit a signboard outside a shop, causing both youths to fall and sustain injuries. This accident allowed the pursuing public to catch hold of them. Vijay Kumar then called the Police Control Room (PCR), and officers from the Daresi police soon reached the spot to take the individuals into custody.

The police had initially booked Tarun and Anuj Sharma under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including IPC 379-B (snatching), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), and 34 (acts done with common intention).
