Security Forces Intercept Heroin Consignment in Jammu Border Area
In a significant counter-narcotics operation, security forces on Friday confiscated 503 grams of heroin near the international border in Jammu's RS Pura sector. Authorities suspect the contraband was air-dropped from Pakistan using a drone, highlighting ongoing cross-border smuggling attempts.
Second Major Seizure Within 24 Hours
This recovery comes just one day after a joint team of Border Security Force (BSF) and Jammu & Kashmir Police intercepted 2 kilograms of heroin in Bahadurpur village, located in Jammu's Bishnah area. The earlier seizure, valued at approximately Rs 12 crore in international markets, occurred mere kilometers from the India-Pakistan border, indicating intensified smuggling activities in the region.
Coordinated Search Operation Leads to Discovery
Acting on intelligence inputs, personnel from BSF's 165 Battalion and local police launched a comprehensive search operation between Floura and Suchetgarh areas around 8:45 AM. The operation focused on agricultural fields approximately one kilometer from the international border, with Suchetgarh and Octroi serving as the nearest Indian border outposts, facing Pakistan's Inayat post directly across the border.
At approximately 10:45 AM, the search party identified a suspicious package concealed in a farm belonging to Suchetgarh resident Aga Paul. The consignment, meticulously wrapped in yellow plastic and secured with black tape, was immediately secured and authorities notified the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for further investigation.
Arrests and Investigation
An NCB team arrived at the scene around 2:30 PM, accompanied by two arrested individuals identified as Jammu residents Ramesh Lal and Zahid Mohammad. Investigators confirmed that the seizure was made based on disclosures provided by these suspects during interrogation.
The operation concluded with all necessary formalities completed under the supervision of senior officers including DIG BSF Chatarpal Singh, Assistant Commandant of BSF 165 Battalion Tanzen Sonam, and SDPO RS Pura Gurmeet Singh. The NCB team subsequently transported both the seized heroin and the arrested suspects back to Jammu for further legal proceedings.
Broader Security Implications
These consecutive seizures underscore the persistent challenges security forces face along the Jammu border region. The suspected use of drones for narcotics transportation represents an evolving threat that requires continuous vigilance and technological countermeasures. Security analysts note that such smuggling attempts often fund illicit activities and pose significant threats to regional stability.
The successful interceptions demonstrate improved coordination between BSF, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and NCB in combating cross-border narcotics trafficking. Authorities have intensified patrols and surveillance along vulnerable border sectors, particularly in areas where agricultural fields provide cover for dropped contraband.
Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or unidentified packages to security forces immediately. The investigation continues as authorities work to dismantle the networks behind these smuggling attempts and prevent future incidents.
