Tragic Drowning of Six-Year-Old Boy in Ghaziabad Cremation Ground Pond
A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Ghaziabad's Ankur Vihar area when a six-year-old boy drowned in a pond inside a cremation ground while chasing a kite. The child's body was recovered nearly 24 hours later after rescue teams battled through garbage and sludge that severely hampered their efforts.
Disappearance and Search for Missing Child
The victim, identified as Aatif from Buddha Nagar Colony, went missing on Sunday evening after leaving home to play. His father, Arif, who works as a daily wager at an idol factory in Loni, initially believed his son had gone for private tuition classes.
"We thought he had gone to his private tutor," Arif said. "When he did not return home by 8pm, we went to his coaching class and found he had never arrived. After that, we informed police and started searching for him."
As the search intensified, children from the neighborhood informed the family that Aatif had been seen chasing kites near the cremation ground. Police examination of CCTV footage confirmed the boy entering the compound, and his slippers were later discovered at the edge of the pond inside the premises.
Challenging Rescue Operation in Polluted Pond
Police immediately launched a search operation on Sunday evening, but rescue efforts faced significant obstacles due to the deplorable condition of the pond. Yogendra Singh Panwar, SHO of Ankur Vihar police station, explained that National Disaster Response Force teams were called in promptly, but the pond was so choked with waste that their boat could not function properly.
"The pond was full of garbage and waste material, which prevented the boat from moving ahead," Panwar stated. "The operation, moreover, had to be stopped at night because of the darkness."
Authorities deployed an excavator and municipal sanitation workers to clear filth from the pond before the search could continue effectively. On Monday morning, more than ten divers were called to the scene to assist with the operation.
Body Recovery and Investigation Details
The divers finally recovered Aatif's body around 4pm on Monday, nearly a full day after his disappearance. The body has been sent for autopsy, and the report is currently awaited by investigators.
Police investigation suggests that Aatif had been playing with friends before running after a kite that had drifted toward the cremation ground. "He appears to have reached the pond while chasing it and removed his slippers before entering the water," Panwar explained.
Authorities noted that the family had not submitted a formal written complaint until late Monday evening, though they had been actively involved in the search since their son's disappearance.
