AAP Sarpanch Sent to Judicial Custody in Major Drug Seizure Case
In a significant development, Parminder Singh, alias Pamma, the sarpanch of Kalsian village in Tarn Taran district and a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has been sent to judicial custody. This action follows his arrest by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a substantial drug seizure case involving approximately 18 kilograms of narcotics.
Court Proceedings and Arrest Details
Parminder Singh was produced before the Ajnala court on Friday after the expiry of his police remand. An official from the NCB confirmed that he has been remanded to judicial custody and will be brought on a production warrant soon for further investigations into the case. The arrest stems from a joint operation conducted by the NCB and the Border Security Force (BSF) on February 16, which led to the recovery of 8.8 kg of heroin, 5.6 kg of methamphetamine (commonly known as "ice"), and 3 kg of opium from Kakkar and Pandori villages.
Investigation and Links to Drug Peddlers
During this operation, three drug peddlers were apprehended. Their interrogation subsequently led the NCB to Parminder Singh. The agency has indicated that his name emerged during the questioning of Jaspal Singh, alias Jassa, from Ajnala, who was among those arrested on February 16. Along with Jassa, two other individuals were taken into custody in connection with the contraband seizure.
The NCB has asserted that further investigations are likely to uncover more individuals involved in this drug network. This case highlights ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region, with authorities intensifying their scrutiny of cross-border smuggling activities.
Additional Developments and Cross-Border Implications
In a related development, the NCB has brought Pakistani national Abu Bakar on a production warrant from jail. Abu Bakar was previously arrested from the Khemkaran sector with 10 kg of contraband. Various security and intelligence agencies are currently interrogating him to uncover potential links to cross-border smuggling and possible connections with terrorist organizations.
This case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tackling drug trafficking, particularly in border areas like Tarn Taran district. The judicial custody of the AAP sarpanch marks a critical step in the ongoing probe, as authorities continue to delve deeper into the network behind this significant drug seizure.
