AAP Workers Stage Dharna Outside BJP Chief's House Over ED Raids
In a strong show of protest, workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gathered outside the residence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief in Chandigarh on Wednesday. The demonstrators were voicing their anger against the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids conducted at the homes and offices of several AAP leaders. The protest, which lasted for several hours, saw party workers holding placards and raising slogans against the central government.
Protest Highlights
The dharna, organized by the Chandigarh unit of AAP, was led by senior party leaders who condemned what they termed as the misuse of central agencies for political vendetta. The protesters demanded an immediate halt to what they called the BJP's witch-hunt against opposition parties. They also called for the resignation of the BJP chief, holding him responsible for the alleged harassment of AAP leaders.
Speaking at the protest, an AAP spokesperson said, "The ED raids are a clear abuse of power by the central government. They are targeting our party leaders to weaken us ahead of the upcoming elections. We will not be intimidated." The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the local administration, urging them to take note of the situation.
Background of the Raids
The ED has been conducting raids across multiple states in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy. Several AAP leaders, including ministers and MLAs, have been questioned or arrested. The party has consistently denied any wrongdoing and accused the BJP of using investigative agencies to target political opponents.
The protest in Chandigarh is part of a series of demonstrations planned by AAP across the country to highlight what they describe as the BJP's authoritarian tactics. The BJP, on its part, has dismissed the allegations, stating that the ED is acting independently under the law.
As the political temperature rises, both parties are expected to intensify their campaigns ahead of the next round of state elections. The AAP's protest outside the BJP chief's house underscores the deepening political rivalry between the two parties.
