Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent political figure, appeared before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Thursday for questioning in connection with the Leader of Opposition (LoP) selection signature forgery case. The interrogation took place at Bhabani Bhaban, the state secretariat, where Banerjee arrived about 10 minutes ahead of the court-stipulated deadline.
Prior to his arrival, Banerjee made a brief stopover at his Kalighat residence, which lasted nearly 30 minutes. The premises of Bhabani Bhaban were wrapped in tight security cover as the questioning proceeded. The case pertains to alleged forgery of signatures during the selection process of the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.
The CID has been investigating the matter for several weeks, and Banerjee's appearance marks a significant development in the probe. Details of the questioning have not been disclosed, but sources indicate that Banerjee cooperated with the investigators. The case has drawn political attention, with rival parties trading accusations over the alleged forgery.
Banerjee left the secretariat after the session, declining to comment to the media. Further investigations are ongoing, and the CID may summon other individuals connected to the case. The development is expected to intensify political debates in the state as the legal process unfolds.
