Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee will not appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday in connection with the alleged fake signature case linked to the West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) election controversy. According to sources within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), Banerjee has formally communicated his decision to the CID through a letter sent via his legal counsel.
Background of the Case
The case pertains to allegations that signatures of TMC MLAs were forged on a letter dated May 19, which purportedly supported the selection process for the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The CID, which has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-rank officer, is examining discrepancies between the disputed signatures and official records maintained by the Assembly.
Investigation Progress
The investigation remains ongoing, with multiple political leaders already questioned by the CID. Forensic verification of the contested signatures is currently underway to determine their authenticity. The SIT is expected to submit a detailed report on the findings in due course.
Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent leader of the TMC, had been summoned by the CID to appear for questioning. However, his decision to skip the appearance has drawn attention, with political observers noting that the matter could escalate further as the probe continues.
The CID has not yet commented on Banerjee's absence or the next steps in the investigation. The case has added to the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal, with both the ruling TMC and opposition parties closely watching the developments.
