Accused in minor sexual assault case injured in police firing

A 40-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl sustained a gunshot injury during a police operation in Assam's Kamrup district, officials said on Monday. The incident occurred when the accused, identified as Ali, attempted to flee and attacked police personnel.

Incident Details

According to Kamrup district Superintendent of Police Subhasish Baruah, a case was registered on Sunday following a complaint by the victim's parents. Police launched a search operation and located the accused. Initially, officers intended to bring him to the local police station, but due to a large crowd gathering and protesting, they decided to take him to another station instead.

While being transported around 2 am, the vehicle slowed down because of poor road conditions. At that moment, Ali allegedly snatched a firearm from one of the officers and attempted to open fire. In the ensuing exchange, a bullet struck the police vehicle, and Ali was hit in the leg. He was immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
