Activists Demand 'Manya Act' After Hubballi Honour Killing, Call for Strict Law
Activists Push for 'Manya Act' to Stop Honour Killings in Karnataka

In a strong response to a recent brutal murder, writers and activists in Karnataka have intensified their demand for a dedicated and stringent law to curb honour killings in the state. The call comes in the wake of the killing of a pregnant woman in Hubballi, which has sparked widespread outrage.

Outcry Over Hubballi Murder

Writer Ravikumar Telex and activist Deshadri Hosmane addressed the media in Shivamogga on Saturday, condemning the horrific incident. They highlighted the case of Manya Patil, who was recently murdered in Hubballi's Inam Veerapur area. The victim was pregnant, and reports indicate she and her partner had married against their family's wishes.

Ravikumar did not mince words, stating that such violent acts are a stain on the state's social fabric. "Such incidents are a blot on the state," he told reporters. "We urge the government to take strict action against those responsible." He emphasized that the government must send a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated.

The Push for the 'Manya Act'

The activists revealed a concrete plan of action to address this systemic issue. They have initiated a social media campaign to gather public opinion on effective measures to prevent honour killings. This grassroots effort aims to build momentum and demonstrate public support for legislative action.

Their primary goal is to meet with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the near future. During this meeting, they plan to formally demand the enactment of a separate, strict law specifically designed to tackle honour killings. In a poignant tribute to the victim, they have proposed that this proposed legislation be named the 'Manya Act'.

Intercaste Marriage as a Social Solution

Beyond immediate legal recourse, Ravikumar articulated a broader social vision rooted in the teachings of Indian reformers. He pointed out that intercaste marriages have long been advocated as a powerful solution to dismantle caste-based discrimination and hierarchy.

He invoked the legacy of revered social reformers like Basavanna and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who championed the ideals of equality and social justice. By promoting and protecting the right to marry by choice, regardless of caste, society can take a significant step towards eradicating the regressive mindset that fuels such violent crimes, the activists argued.

The murder of Manya Patil has thus become a rallying point for a larger movement in Karnataka, one that seeks both immediate legal justice and long-term social change to end the menace of honour-based violence.
