The Amritsar Development Authority (ADA) demolished three newly developed unauthorised colonies in the district on July 9, 2026, as part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal real estate developments. The action was carried out by the District Town Planner (Regulatory) wing under the direction of ADA Chief Administrator Nitesh Kumar Jain.
Colonies Demolished and Locations
During the demolition drive, officials razed an unauthorised colony on Boparai Road in Kathunangal village and another in Nag Kalan village, with police personnel from Kathunangal and Majitha police stations present. A third colony, developed under the name “Dashmesh Avenue” at Nangli village, was also demolished, though police were not present during that operation.
A JCB machine was deployed to demolish structures on Batala Road, as seen in images from the scene. The ADA has been actively targeting illegal colonies that have sprung up without proper approvals.
Legal Notices and Continued Violations
The District Town Planner confirmed that notices under the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act (PAPRA), 1995, had been served on the developers, directing them to stop construction. Despite these notices, the developers allegedly continued work without submitting any explanation, forcing the authority to proceed with demolition.
According to the official, action will also be initiated against landowners and developers based on revenue records. Under the amended PAPRA Act, 2024, those found guilty of developing unauthorised colonies can face imprisonment ranging from five to ten years and fines between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 5 crore.
Public Advisory
The ADA advised the public not to purchase plots in unapproved colonies without first verifying their approval status. Prospective buyers are urged to seek documentary proof of approval issued by the competent authority and check the list of unauthorised colonies available on the authority’s website before making any investment.
The authority further appealed to residents to obtain all mandatory approvals from the competent authority before undertaking any construction to avoid legal action. This demolition drive is part of a broader effort to curb illegal real estate activities in the region, which have been a growing concern for authorities.
