Attorney General Warns Digital Platforms Are 'Stealing Human Minds', Undermining Justice
In a powerful address at Vidhi Utsav 2026, Attorney General R Venkataramani issued a stark warning about the growing dominance of digital ecosystems over human attention, describing platforms driven by endless scrolling and algorithmic engagement as committing a "theft of the human mind." Speaking before an assembly of senior jurists, policymakers, corporate leaders, and legal professionals at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, Venkataramani emphasized that this erosion of independent thought poses a direct challenge to the pursuit of justice.
The Critical Link Between Reflective Thinking and Justice
Venkataramani articulated that the loss of reflective thinking fundamentally undermines legal institutions, which depend on reasoned deliberation and moral clarity to function effectively. "Legal and political institutions cannot achieve their objectives unless individuals internalize values of fairness, restraint, and respect for others' rights," he stated, highlighting that structural reforms alone are insufficient without nurturing a culture of responsibility and participation.
Drawing from Literature and Philosophy
The Attorney General enriched his argument by referencing classical works including the Ramayana, Shakespearean plays, and the writings of Milton, illustrating the deep connections between law and literature. He noted that literature serves as "not merely creative expression but a reflection of the principles that govern human life and social order," underscoring that law extends far beyond a rigid system of rules into the realm of human values.
Furthermore, Venkataramani drew upon Indian philosophical traditions, particularly the concept of dharma, to argue that responsibility and ethical conduct are central to understanding law and justice. These timeless values, he asserted, remain critically relevant to constitutional governance, where law must be guided by moral responsibility rather than mere procedural compliance.
Contemporary Legal Challenges and Interdependent Values
Addressing modern legal dilemmas, Venkataramani described fairness, equality, liberty, and social peace as interdependent values that must be balanced carefully. He cautioned against privileging one value at the expense of others, emphasizing that a holistic approach is essential for sustainable justice. While acknowledging progress in legal frameworks, he stressed that true advancement requires individuals to embody ethical principles in their daily lives.
Event Highlights and Initiatives
The two-day Vidhi Utsav 2026, organized by Oakridge Publishing, served as a significant gathering for the legal community. The event featured the release of two notable books: "Scared Tiger Tales" by Manoj Kumar and "Unshackling the Elephant" by Anand Prasad. Additionally, it marked the launch of "Aatman Samarpan," a global health initiative aimed at promoting reformative and wellness-focused activities specifically for the legal fraternity, addressing the unique pressures faced by professionals in this field.
This initiative reflects a growing recognition within the legal community of the need to support mental and physical well-being alongside professional development, creating a more resilient and effective justice system.
