Ahmedabad NDPS Court Delivers 20-Year Sentence in International Drug Trafficking Case
A special court in Ahmedabad handling cases under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has pronounced a significant verdict, sentencing a Nigerian and a Zambian national to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court, in its order issued on Tuesday, also imposed a substantial fine of Rs 2 lakh on each of the accused individuals involved in this high-profile international drug trafficking operation.

According to official statements from the Narcotics Control Bureau's Ahmedabad zonal unit, the case originated from precise intelligence inputs. On September 3, 2021, authorities apprehended Hanchabila John, a citizen of Zambia, at the Ahmedabad airport. He was caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of 2.75 kilograms of heroin into India on a flight arriving from Dubai.
During the subsequent investigation, the NCB identified Nwaobu Christian Arinze, a 37-year-old Nigerian national, as the intended receiver of the illicit contraband. Arinze was promptly arrested by the NCB in Ahmedabad, marking a crucial breakthrough in dismantling this cross-border drug network.
Legal Proceedings and Court Conviction
The NCB filed a formal complaint before the additional district and sessions court in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2022. The charges were framed under the stringent provisions of the NDPS Act, which prescribes severe penalties for drug-related offences to combat the menace of narcotics trafficking.
