Ahmedabad Court Remands Accused in Jewellery Theft Till May 25

A local court in Ahmedabad on Thursday remanded Mayur Mali, a co-accused in the Rs 1.66 crore jewellery theft case, to police custody until May 25 following his arrest by Nikol police. Mali is accused of conspiring to steal from a city jewellery showroom with the assistance of his associate Harshida Shetty, who worked there as a sales staffer.

Theft Details and Arrest

On May 11, Shetty allegedly fled with 1.211 kg of gold jewellery valued at Rs 1.66 crore. After her arrest, Shetty reportedly disclosed that the theft was planned with Mali's help, and that they traveled on his bike to Udaipur, Jaipur, and Delhi. She claimed that Mali took away a major share of the stolen jewellery.

Police Request for Custody

Seeking five-day custody, the investigating officer told the court that jewellery worth Rs 16.7 lakh had been recovered from Mali. However, custodial interrogation was needed to trace the remaining stolen items, as nearly 800 grams of jewellery is yet to be recovered.

Citing Mali's lack of cooperation, the officer stated in the remand report that he was not disclosing where he had sold some of the items. Shetty had revealed that Mali sold a bracelet at a GIFT City shop and another item in Delhi, but he has not revealed the buyers' identities.

Additional Complaints

Police also informed the court that a cheating complaint is registered against Mali at Madhavpura police station, and his interrogation is necessary to ascertain his involvement in other offences. The investigation continues as authorities work to recover the remaining stolen jewellery.
