Ahmedabad Family Attacked While Heading to Police Station Over Procession Dispute

In a shocking incident in Ahmedabad, a woman and her two children were brutally attacked late Tuesday night as they were on their way to a police station to report an earlier assault. The attack occurred in an airport-area neighbourhood, highlighting escalating tensions linked to a long-standing community procession dispute.

Police Register Case Under Multiple BNS Sections

Airport police registered a case on Wednesday based on a complaint filed by the woman's 25-year-old son. The incident triggered a jurisdiction issue, with both Sardarnagar and Airport police responding to the scene. Ultimately, the Airport police took charge and filed the case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The charges include:

  • Section 76: Assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to disrobe
  • Section 118(1): Grievous hurt by dangerous weapons
  • Section 117(2): Grievous hurt
  • Sections 189(1) and 189(4): Unlawful assembly, including armed with deadly weapons
  • Section 190: Liability for offences committed in pursuit of a common object
  • Sections 191(2) and 191(3): Rioting, including armed with a deadly weapon

Background of the Dispute and Initial Confrontation

According to the complaint, the attack stemmed from an earlier dispute related to a community procession. Tensions reportedly began about two years ago when objections were raised over participation by people from another community, leading to a police application and action at that time.

On Tuesday night, the complainant reported being confronted near a local circle at a pan shop. A man allegedly warned him about the upcoming procession and threatened, "I will see how you take out the procession this time." Later, two men arrived, a scuffle ensued, and the complainant was struck on the legs with a stick. Police were called, and he went to a hospital for treatment before returning home.

Escalation and Attack on Family Members

The situation escalated when the same men chased the complainant's younger brother, who contacted police and got into a police vehicle for safety. The complainant then left on a motorcycle with his mother and sister, following the police vehicle towards the station to file a report.

Tragically, several men pursued them and attacked with sticks, injuring the mother and sister. The sister's clothing was torn during the assault, adding to the severity of the incident. This attack underscores the volatile nature of the dispute and the risks faced by the family as they sought police intervention.

Authorities are investigating the matter thoroughly, with the Airport police leading the case due to the jurisdiction resolution. The community is urged to maintain peace as legal proceedings unfold.
