A 19-year-old man has been formally charged with abetting the suicide of a 19-year-old Nepalese woman in the Krishnanagar area of Ahmedabad on Friday. The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the victim's father, leading to the arrest of the accused, identified as Chetan Bohra.
Background of the Incident
According to the complaint filed by Jiyune Bisht, a 52-year-old farmer from Nepal, his daughter Chetna Bisht began her undergraduate studies in Nepal in August 2025. She later eloped with Chetan Bohra, and the couple moved to Ahmedabad in February of this year. They were residing together in a rented accommodation in Krishnanagar, as per the police complaint.
Initial Reports of Well-Being
The father stated that initially, Chetna communicated with her family via social media, claiming that she was being treated well by Chetan. The family even discussed formalizing their relationship during the Diwali festival and promised that a wedding would take place when the couple visited Nepal next. However, the situation changed dramatically over the subsequent weeks.
In the last one and a half months, Chetna reportedly told relatives that Bohra had been harassing and physically assaulting her. She further alleged that he prevented her from visiting her relatives in Ahmedabad. These accusations were repeated during phone calls made on April 24, April 27, and May 5 to family members in Nepal and relatives living in Ahmedabad. When relatives attempted to contact Bohra, he did not respond, according to the complaint.
Discovery of the Body
On May 15, the family was informed by a relative that Chetna had hanged herself at their rented residence in Krishnanagar. Upon receiving this news, other relatives rushed to the scene and found the woman dead. The police initially registered the case as an accidental death. However, after the victim's father arrived in Ahmedabad from Nepal, he lodged a formal complaint accusing Bohra of subjecting his daughter to mental and physical torture, which ultimately drove her to suicide.
Police Action
Krishnanagar police inspector V H Joshi confirmed that Chetan Bohra has been arrested on charges of abetment to suicide. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining the evidence, including the victim's phone records and statements from relatives.
