Ahmedabad Police Uncover Liquor Smuggling Operation Disguised as Courier Consignment

In a significant enforcement action during night patrolling, police in Motera intercepted a loading rickshaw transporting suspicious parcels and recovered 144 cans of beer. The Chandkheda police subsequently registered a formal case on Friday against an individual from Adalaj, invoking sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Tip-Off Leads to Interception and Detention

According to the official complaint lodged by constable Rajan Navratsinh, law enforcement received credible intelligence indicating that illicit liquor was being transported under the cover of regular courier shipments. Acting swiftly on this tip-off, officers conducted a targeted operation and stopped a loading rickshaw near Motera village.

During the interception, two individuals were detained for questioning. The first was the rickshaw driver, identified as Shailesh Patni. The second was a man who arrived at the scene on a two-wheeler, named Dhaval Raval. Their detention marked the initial phase of the investigation into the suspected smuggling attempt.

Discovery of Contraband and Forged Documentation

Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered four parcels wrapped in white sacks. These packages were labeled as shipments originating from Mumbai and destined for Ahmedabad, presenting the appearance of standard delivery cargo. However, when opened at the police station for further examination, they revealed six cartons containing a total of 144 tins of beer, with an estimated market value of approximately Rs 25,920.

A critical aspect of the investigation emerged during the scrutiny of accompanying paperwork. The documents described the contents as industrial goods, including wires and metal materials. This glaring discrepancy led investigators to conclude that the bills were deliberately forged to conceal the true nature of the liquor consignment, constituting a clear attempt at deception.

Legal Action Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

The Chandkheda police have registered a case against an Adalaj resident under specific sections of the BNS. The charges include:

  • Section 336(2): Pertaining to forgery.
  • Section 338: Addressing forgery of valuable security.
  • Section 340(2): Concerning the use of forged documents.

This legal action underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident, highlighting the use of fraudulent means to transport prohibited items. The case remains under active investigation as police work to uncover further details and potential links to broader smuggling networks.

The seizure and subsequent filing of the forgery case demonstrate the vigilance of Ahmedabad police in combating illicit activities and enforcing regulations against the unauthorized transport of alcohol.
