A heated argument over toll collection fees erupted into a violent confrontation at the Savarkhed toll plaza on the Akola-Washim highway on Thursday morning. The incident saw toll plaza staff allegedly attacking motorists with sticks and iron pipes, leaving one person critically injured.
What Sparked the Violent Clash?
The conflict began when a group of motorists, traveling from Malegaon towards Akola, claimed exemption from paying the toll. They asserted their right as residents living within a 20-kilometer radius of the plaza. However, the staff at the Savarkhed toll plaza insisted that even local motorists were required to purchase a monthly pass, which costs approximately 350 rupees.
This disagreement quickly escalated into a heated argument. According to the accounts provided by the motorists, the toll staff then resorted to hooliganism, losing control of the situation entirely.
Assault with Sticks and Iron Pipes
The verbal dispute turned physically violent when the toll plaza employees allegedly began beating the motorists. They used sticks and iron pipes as weapons during the assault. One of the injured victims sustained serious wounds and was later shifted to the government hospital in Akola for treatment, where his condition was reported as critical.
Following the attack, the injured motorists approached the Patur police station to file an official complaint about the incident.
Police Action and Case Registered
Confirming the violent event, Patur police in-charge Hanumant Dopewar stated that a formal case has been registered. The police have booked five accused toll plaza staff members at the Patur police station. The charges have been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Sections 118, 115, and 3/5.
This case highlights the ongoing tensions and disputes that can arise at toll collection points, especially concerning exemptions for local residents. The police investigation is now underway to determine the full sequence of events and hold those responsible accountable.
