Aligarh Shooting: Man Killed, Student Injured After Holi Function, Ragging Dispute Suspected

A tragic incident unfolded in Aligarh on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and injury to a college student. The shooting occurred near a bridge outside Shri Varshney Mahavidyalaya around 12:45 pm, shortly after a Holi Milan function had concluded.

Police authorities have indicated that the motive behind the attack appears to be rooted in a dispute linked to ragging and longstanding enmity between the involved parties.

Details of the Victims and the Attack

The deceased has been identified as Anshu Tomar, a factory labourer from Aligarh. He sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his back and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured victim is Prithviraj Chauhan, a 25-year-old third-year BA student. He suffered a bullet injury to his leg and was promptly admitted to a local hospital. Medical professionals have confirmed that he is out of danger and receiving treatment.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Kamlesh Kumar, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle. "We received information that Dheeraj Thakur and another individual identified as Golu Thakur arrived on a motorcycle and allegedly fired at the two. Anshu was shot in the back, while Prithviraj sustained a gunshot wound to the leg," Kumar stated.

Background of the Dispute and Police Investigation

Prithviraj Chauhan has alleged that Dheeraj Thakur, a student of DS College, had been involved in harassing fellow students through ragging for an extended period. He claimed that he had confronted Thakur earlier, which escalated into a significant dispute between them.

Furthermore, Prithviraj mentioned that he had previously implicated Thakur in a false case, leading to his imprisonment. This history of conflict has been corroborated by police investigations.

DSP Kamlesh Kumar elaborated, "The accused and the victims knew each other and had an existing dispute. Preliminary investigation points to an earlier rivalry between the parties, which likely culminated in this violent act."

Legal Actions and Case Registration

In response to the incident, a formal case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include:

  • Section 103: Murder
  • Section 109: Attempt to Murder

Authorities are actively pursuing the accused individuals, Dheeraj Thakur and Golu Thakur, who fled the scene after the shooting. The investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on gathering further evidence and witness statements to build a strong case.

This incident has raised concerns about campus safety and the persistent issue of ragging in educational institutions. Local communities and student groups are calling for stricter enforcement of anti-ragging laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.
