Two Ambulance Drivers Arrested for Alleged Gang Rape in Bhubaneswar
In a shocking incident in Bhubaneswar, two ambulance drivers were arrested on Monday for the alleged gang rape of a 25-year-old woman from West Bengal. The crime reportedly took place on Friday night, according to police sources.
Details of the Incident
The survivor had recently arrived in Bhubaneswar to visit her husband, who works for a private company on the outskirts of the city. On Friday evening, while she was searching for a cab to reach the railway station, one of the accused—who lives near her husband's rented accommodation—offered her a lift in his vehicle.
Trusting the acquaintance, the woman agreed to travel with him. However, as per her complaint, he instead took her to his friend's room, where both men allegedly took turns to sexually assault her.
Police Action and Investigation
The survivor lodged a formal complaint with the police on Sunday. Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena stated, "We took the case seriously and registered a gang rape case. The two drivers were promptly arrested after we found evidence against them. We will ensure that the chargesheet is filed at the earliest."
Police have recorded the woman's statement, and the accused were remanded in judicial custody after their bail pleas were rejected. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to a swift legal process.
Broader Implications
This case highlights concerns about safety and trust in urban areas, particularly for women traveling alone. The use of an ambulance in the crime adds a disturbing layer, given the vehicle's association with emergency services and public trust.
Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The incident has sparked discussions on improving security measures and support systems for victims of such crimes in Bhubaneswar and beyond.
