Amravati Police Crack Down on Major Drug Trafficking Network
In a significant anti-narcotics operation, the Amravati city police have dismantled a drug trafficking ring, arresting three individuals, including the alleged mastermind from Mumbai. The crackdown, which took place on Saturday, resulted in the seizure of 78 grams of Mephedrone (MD) powder and three mobile phones, with an estimated total value of Rs 12 lakh.
Expansive Seizures and Ongoing Investigations
This latest bust is part of a broader initiative that has so far led to the confiscation of 2.2 kg of MD powder, worth approximately Rs 3.3 crore. Acting on a credible tip-off, a crime branch team under the leadership of Inspector Sandeep Chavan set up a trap and apprehended two suspects: Azim Asad Shekh, aged 36, and Shiekh Sameer Shiekh Amim, aged 25. The arrests occurred on the Lal Khadi to Navsari Ring Road in Amravati.
During interrogation, Azim disclosed that he had sourced the illicit substances from suppliers based in Rajasthan, identified as Mangilal and Birada Ram, also known as Birju Sen. Following this lead, the police successfully arrested the alleged mastermind, Satyam Ganesh Sonavane, from Kurla in Mumbai. He has since been transferred to the Badnera police station for further proceedings.
Legal Actions and Asset Confiscation Plans
The authorities are now intensifying their efforts to target the financial gains from this drug trafficking operation. Police are actively working to confiscate assets acquired through these illegal activities and are considering stringent legal measures against the accused. Potential actions include invoking the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) or the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act, which could lead to severe penalties and prolonged detention.
This operation was conducted under the expert guidance of Commissioner of Police Rakesh Ola, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde, and Assistant Commissioner Shyam Ghuge. On Monday, the three accused were remanded to magisterial custody for a period of 15 days, allowing for continued investigation and evidence collection.
The crackdown highlights the Amravati police's commitment to combating drug-related crimes and disrupting supply chains that fuel addiction in the region. With ongoing probes into the Rajasthan-based suppliers and asset tracking, this case underscores a robust approach to law enforcement in tackling organized narcotics networks.
