Amravati SIT Intensifies Probe with Four More Arrests in Sexual Abuse Case
In a significant development in the Amravati sexual abuse case, the police on Thursday arrested four additional suspects, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to eight. This action follows the formation of a 47-member special investigation team (SIT) just a day earlier, as the digital trail from viral sex videos continues to uncover more individuals involved in the scandal.
Key Accused and Crime Details Unveiled
Among those detained, the main accused, Ayaan Ahmed, aged 19, has been identified as the primary perpetrator who lured women and recorded sexual acts. The other suspects are alleged to have been in possession of these videos and played a role in making them go viral. Amravati (rural) SP Vishal Anand provided chilling details, stating that Ayaan took his victims to multiple locations for abuse and filming.
"A flat in Amravati city served as the epicentre of the crime," Anand revealed. "The victims were also transported to a hill station resort in Chikhaldara and various cafes across different towns, indicating a premeditated and organized pattern of exploitation."
Digital Evidence and Forensic Analysis
During house searches, authorities seized critical electronic devices, including a laptop, a hard disk, and a tablet, in addition to mobile phones from the accused. All these devices have been dispatched to the forensic science laboratory for comprehensive data extraction, which is expected to yield further insights into the extent of the crimes and identify additional perpetrators.
Survivor Details and Investigation Challenges
SP Anand addressed concerns about the case, denying any communal angle and confirming that all eight survivors identified so far are Muslims. However, establishing whether they are minors remains a challenge. "We need to verify their age at the time of the crime," he explained. "Despite efforts by women officers to reach out, none of the survivors or their families have filed a formal complaint, complicating the investigation."
SIT Structure and Broader Probe
The SIT has been strategically divided to handle different facets of the case efficiently:
- One team is focused on tracing more accused individuals.
- Another is dedicated to the technical analysis of digital devices.
- A third group is verifying if an organized criminal nexus was behind the exploitation.
Anand also refuted social media speculation that suggested nearly 200 victims, emphasizing that only eight have been confirmed to date. "There is no attempt to suppress victim numbers or aid the accused," he asserted. "I am engaging with the media daily to ensure transparency in this sensitive investigation."
Police Personnel Shifts and State-Level Oversight
In response to allegations from some organizations, six personnel from the Paratwada police station have been transferred to the control room, and an inquiry has been initiated against them. These groups claimed that the officers were not receptive when the videos initially went viral, potentially influencing the probe. Anand assured that senior state-level police officials are receiving regular briefings to monitor progress closely.
Legal Charges Against Main Accused
Key accused Ayaan Ahmed faces serious legal repercussions, having been booked under:
- Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
- Sections 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
- Sections 67 and 67(A) of the Information Technology Act.
