A 24-year-old man was shot dead outside his home in Shahura village under the Lopoke police station limits on Friday night, following a fallout that originated from a school friendship turned sour. The victim, Guravtar Singh, was allegedly killed by his former classmate and neighbor, Gurjant Singh, along with accomplices, after an argument escalated into gunfire.
Friendship Turns Fatal
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kapil Kaushal, Guravtar and Gurjant had studied together in the same school and class and were once close friends. However, their relationship deteriorated over time due to Gurjant's enmity with another group. Guravtar reportedly maintained contact with members of that rival group, which Gurjant frequently objected to, leading to repeated arguments.
The dispute culminated on Friday night when Gurjant, Honey, and others arrived at Guravtar's house on motorcycles around 11 pm. They called him outside, and a heated argument broke out. The confrontation quickly turned violent as the accused allegedly opened fire with pistols, firing approximately five shots. Guravtar sustained multiple bullet injuries, including a gunshot wound to his leg, and collapsed on the spot.
Victim Rushed to Hospital, Declared Dead
Family members rushed Guravtar to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. DSP Kaushal stated that the victim succumbed to excessive bleeding from his injuries. The victim's father, Lahora Singh, alleged that his son had been involved in a long-running dispute with Gurjant Singh and his accomplices, and that the accused had come to their house with the intention of attacking his son.
Guravtar was the only child of his parents, leaving the family devastated by the loss. The killing has sent shockwaves through Shahura village, where residents expressed grief and anger over the incident.
Police Investigation Underway
The police reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. They shifted the body for a post-mortem and registered a murder case based on the statement of the victim's father. DSP Kaushal confirmed that a hunt has been launched to apprehend the accused, including Gurjant Singh and Honey, while further investigations are underway.
The case highlights how personal rivalries, even those rooted in school friendships, can escalate into deadly violence. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue their search for the suspects.
