Amritsar Police Busts Arms Trafficking Module, Recovers Five Sophisticated Pistols
In a significant crackdown, the Amritsar commissionerate police on Wednesday announced the busting of an arms trafficking module, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of five sophisticated pistols from their possession. The operation marks a crucial step in curbing illegal arms trade in the region.
Arrests and Recoveries
The arrested accused have been identified as Rohit Arora, aged 25, a resident of Gilwali Gate in Amritsar, and Harpreet Singh alias Happy, aged 24, from village Meerakot Kalan in Amritsar. Police recovered a total of five pistols, including three 9MM Glock pistols and two .30 bore pistols, highlighting the advanced nature of the weaponry involved.
Investigation Details
Gaurav Yadav, director general of police, Punjab, revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the accused were in contact with Pakistan-based smugglers through social media platforms. The illegal consignments of arms were reportedly sent via drones, with the accused further supplying these weapons on the directions of their handlers. Yadav emphasized that further investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the network.
Operational Insights
Sharing operational details, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, commissioner of police (CP), Amritsar, stated that acting on specific and reliable information, police teams executed a well-planned operation. They first apprehended accused Rohit Arora, who was an associate of gangster Sonu Kangla. During the search, three pistols were recovered from his possession, including one Glock and two .30 bore pistols.
Based on the disclosure statement of Arora, police subsequently arrested another accused, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, from whom two Glock pistols were seized. This coordinated effort underscores the effectiveness of police intelligence and swift action.
Criminal Background
Both accused are habitual offenders with previous criminal records. Cases against them include charges related to snatching at gunpoint, violations under the Prisons Act, the Arms Act, and the NDPS Act. Bhullar added that they were also involved in narco-arms smuggling, exploiting this illicit trade to make easy money, which poses a serious threat to public safety.
Legal Action
A case has been registered under Sections 25, 6, 7, and 8 of the Arms Act at police station Gate Hakima in Amritsar. This legal step aims to ensure stringent prosecution and deterrence against such illegal activities, reinforcing law enforcement's commitment to maintaining order.
