Amritsar Police Dismantles Major Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Network

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Amritsar police have successfully busted a sophisticated cross-border narco-smuggling network. The operation led to the arrest of two key operatives and the seizure of a substantial quantity of heroin along with illicit drug money.

Arrests and Seizures in the Anti-Drug Operation

Amritsar Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar announced on Thursday that the police have apprehended two individuals involved in this illicit network. The authorities confiscated 7.6 kilograms of high-purity heroin and Rs 21,800 in drug money from the possession of the accused. This seizure represents a major blow to the drug supply chain in the region.

Identities and Criminal Backgrounds of the Accused

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Sahibpreet Singh alias Sahib (19): Originally from Fatehgarh Churian in Batala, he was currently residing in Chheharta, Amritsar.
  • Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan (26): A resident of Guru Nanakpura in Kot Khalsa, Amritsar.

Both accused have prior criminal records, with cases registered against them under the Arms Act and for snatching-related offences. Commissioner Bhullar emphasized that their history of criminal activity underscores the seriousness of their involvement in this smuggling network.

Investigation Reveals International Connections and Smuggling Methods

Preliminary investigations have uncovered that the arrested operatives were in direct contact with a Dubai-based handler. This handler used virtual numbers to communicate, facilitating the cross-border transportation of heroin consignments. The smuggling operation involved the use of drones to deliver the narcotics from across the border, with the handler directing pick-up locations and managing further supply chains.

Commissioner Bhullar further revealed that this Dubai-based handler is linked to multiple narcotics networks and is connected to a major NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) case. This previous case involved the seizure of 43 kilograms of heroin, indicating the handler's significant role in large-scale drug trafficking operations.

Implications and Ongoing Efforts

The bust highlights the evolving tactics of drug smugglers, who increasingly rely on technology such as drones and virtual communication to evade law enforcement. The Amritsar police's successful operation not only disrupts a critical supply route but also provides valuable intelligence for future investigations into international drug cartels.

Authorities are continuing their probe to identify and apprehend other individuals associated with this network, both domestically and internationally. This case underscores the ongoing challenges in combating cross-border crime and the importance of coordinated efforts to tackle the narcotics trade.
