Anantapur SP Orders High-Level Enquiry Into Police Lathi-Charge Incident
In a significant development, Anantapur Superintendent of Police P Jagadeesh has ordered a comprehensive enquiry by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)-rank officer into allegations of police manhandling an accused at the Peddavaduguru police station. The incident, which occurred on April 20, has drawn widespread criticism and public outrage after a video of the event went viral across various social media platforms.
Background: Farmer Complaints and Drone Surveillance
The controversy stems from a series of complaints lodged by local farmers in the Peddavaduguru area and nearby villages. Over the past several days, farmers reported that unidentified individuals were deliberately setting fire to haystack loads that they had carefully preserved. These haystacks represent crucial resources for the agricultural community, and their destruction has caused significant economic losses.
In response to these complaints, the Peddavaduguru police intensified their surveillance efforts. Utilizing advanced drone camera technology, law enforcement officials monitored the area closely. Their vigilance paid off when they apprehended an individual identified as Sudhakar while he was allegedly attempting to set fire to a haystack load near Peddavaduguru village.
The Confrontation and Viral Video
As police officers were transporting Sudhakar to the Peddavaduguru police station, a tense situation unfolded. Angry farmers, who had gathered at the scene, demanded that Sudhakar be handed over to them directly. The farmers held him responsible for their substantial losses and sought immediate justice.
With pressure mounting from the agitated crowd, Peddavaduguru Sub-Inspector Anjaneyulu reportedly pulled out a lathi (police baton) and caned Sudhakar near the police station premises. This act of physical force was captured on video by local bystanders, and the footage quickly spread across social media, amplifying the controversy.
Community Outrage and Political Response
The viral video sparked immediate condemnation from various quarters. Several Dalit organizations strongly criticized the police action, highlighting that Sudhakar is a middle-aged man belonging to their community. These groups condemned what they described as indiscriminate and excessive use of force by law enforcement officials.
Taking serious note of the allegations and the ensuing public outcry, Anantapur SP P Jagadeesh ordered a formal enquiry into the entire incident. The SP has asserted that appropriate disciplinary action will be initiated against any officers found guilty of misconduct, based strictly on the outcome of the investigation.
The ordered enquiry represents a critical step toward accountability and transparency in law enforcement practices in the region. It underscores the importance of proper police conduct, even when dealing with accused individuals, and addresses concerns about community relations and human rights protections.
