A 45-year-old man was killed after being hit by an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus while crossing a road in Vizianagaram district on Thursday. The incident was captured on CCTV camera, showing the man being dragged for several meters before the bus stopped.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place near the RTC complex in Vizianagaram town around 10:30 am. The victim, identified as N. Appala Raju, a resident of the area, was crossing the road when a speeding APSRTC bus hit him. The bus, which was heading towards Srikakulam, ran over him, causing severe injuries. He was rushed to the government hospital but was declared brought dead.
According to police, the driver has been arrested and the bus seized. The driver, identified as M. Srinivasa Rao, claimed he did not see the man crossing the road. The police are investigating the matter further.
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses said that the bus was speeding and the man was crossing the road carelessly. “The bus was coming very fast. The man tried to cross but couldn’t. It was a horrific sight,” said a shopkeeper near the spot.
The incident has sparked anger among locals, who blocked the road for some time demanding compensation for the victim’s family. The police pacified them and assured action.
Official Response
APSRTC officials expressed grief over the incident and said that strict action would be taken against the driver. “We have suspended the driver pending inquiry. We will provide compensation to the family as per rules,” said an official.
The victim’s family has been informed and the body has been sent for postmortem. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
