Anganwadi Worker Arrested for Covering Crying Child with Sack

Tenkasi: An anganwadi worker in Tenkasi district was arrested on Friday for attempting to cover a crying child with a sack at the anganwadi centre in Pavoorchatram. The incident came to light after a video showing the worker admonishing the child and then covering it with a sack went viral on Thursday.

Incident Details

The video shows the woman scolding the child to stop crying before covering it with a sack and then removing it. Following the video's circulation, Selvaraja, a social activist from Surandai, submitted a representation to the district collector, alleging that the child was subjected to harassment. He demanded an immediate inquiry and action against the worker, urging officials to ensure children's safety.

Official Action

An official inquiry confirmed the incident and identified the worker as Kalaiselvi. Tenkasi collector Ranjeet Singh informed TOI that the incident occurred on Thursday, and the worker was suspended after an inquiry by Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) officials. “A formal police complaint was filed by the child’s mother on Thursday. Subsequently, the anganwadi worker was arrested on Friday morning,” he added.
