Armed Highway Robbery in Mhow: Family Attacked, Gold Chain Worth Rs 2 Lakh Stolen
In a shocking incident of highway crime, a family traveling from Nashik to Indore was targeted by a group of armed robbers near the Khalghat toll booth in Mhow. The assailants, numbering five to six, surrounded the family's car, broke its windows, and made off with a valuable gold chain worth approximately Rs 2 lakh.
Details of the Terrifying Incident
The victim, Manoj, a 55-year-old resident of Scheme No 71 in Indore, had visited the Trimbakeshwar temple in Nashik with his family. The group included his wife Sangita Gupta, son Atharv Gupta, and daughter Ashi Gupta. After completing their pilgrimage, they were returning to Indore via the Agra-Bombay National Highway.
According to Sub-Inspector Sawan Muwel of Dhamnod police station, the family's ordeal began when Atharv, who was driving, stopped the car just a few hundred meters past the Khalghat toll booth. He suspected a mechanical issue and parked the vehicle temporarily.
Violent Confrontation and Robbery
As Atharv re-entered the car to continue their journey, the family was suddenly surrounded by five to six armed men. The attackers were equipped with sticks, rods, and sharp-edged weapons. They immediately attempted to force open the car doors, which were fortunately locked.
When they failed to gain entry through the doors, the assailants resorted to violence. They systematically smashed the glass panes on all sides of the vehicle. In the ensuing chaos, they snatched a gold chain from around Sangita Gupta's neck. The chain was valued at Rs 2 lakh. After completing the robbery, the group fled the scene, leaving the traumatized family behind.
Police Response and Investigation
The family managed to drive to the Dhamnod police station, where they filed a formal complaint. Authorities have launched an investigation into the armed robbery, which highlights growing concerns about highway safety in the region.
Key aspects of the case include:
