As the harsh 40-day winter period known as Chillai Kalan grips the region, the Indian Army has significantly intensified its counter-terrorism operations in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The focus is on the districts of Kishtwar and Doda, where security forces are engaged in a proactive campaign to flush out terrorists attempting to exploit the difficult winter conditions.
Heightened Threat and Winter Strategy
Intelligence assessments indicate that approximately 30 to 35 Pakistani terrorists are currently active in the high-altitude, snowbound areas of these districts. These militants are reportedly seeking winter hideouts and attempting to coerce local residents for shelter and support. However, reports suggest that public support for such elements has notably waned in recent times.
To counter this seasonal threat, the security apparatus has adopted a comprehensive winter strategy. The Indian Army is operating in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the Special Operations Group (SOG), Forest Guards, and Village Defence Guards (VDGs). This multi-agency approach ensures a unified and effective response across the challenging terrain.
Joint Operations and Specialized Deployment
The operations are guided by meticulously analysed intelligence, enabling swift and precise actions against terrorist hideouts. Security forces have established temporary forward operating bases and enhanced surveillance posts to maintain a constant vigil over likely infiltration routes and shelter zones used by the terrorists.
A key component of the winter campaign is the deployment of specialized winter warfare units. These troops are exceptionally skilled in combat operations in deep snow, avalanche response and rescue, and high-altitude survival techniques. Their expertise is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness and momentum during the Chillai Kalan, when temperatures plummet and mobility becomes severely restricted.
Ensuring Security in Harsh Conditions
The proactive winter strategy underscores the security forces' commitment to denying terrorists any opportunity to regroup or secure safe havens during the harsh weather. By maintaining pressure through coordinated joint operations, the forces aim to neutralize the threat and ensure the safety of the local population.
