Kochi: An Assam native was arrested with brown sugar in Kochi as part of Operation Toofan–Narco Hunt, conducted by city police on Wednesday.

The accused was identified as Umar Farok, 24, of Laharighat, Morigaon in Assam. During the operation, police allegedly seized 10.98g of brown sugar from the accused.

According to police, the arrest was made based on a tip-off received by city police commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, IPS. Acting on the information, the city Dansaf team and Ernakulam north police jointly conducted an inspection near K P Elizebius Master Road off SRM Road under the limits of Ernakulam North police station.

Kaapa invoked against one

Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (Kaapa) was invoked against a habitual offender involved in multiple criminal cases in Kochi, leading to his detention and imprisonment.

Radhakrishnan, 55, of Thiruvananthapuram, was lodged in Viyyur High Security Prison on Tuesday following an order issued by Ernakulam district collector based on reports submitted by city police.

According to police, Radhakrishnan is accused in around 11 cases registered at Central police station and neighbouring stations in Ernakulam over the past seven years, including robbery, assault and theft. He previously underwent punishment in five cases and was placed under preventive detention for six months in 2025.

After his release, he was arrested in February in connection with the theft of a chain from a person seated at KSRTC bus stand. While he was in judicial custody, police initiated fresh proceedings under Kaapa.
