Nashik Astrologer Ashok Kharat Faces Third Criminal Case as SIT Seeks Custody
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing multiple cases involving astrologer Ashok Kharat is set to seek his police custody in a third criminal case on Thursday. This development follows a court order sending Kharat to 14 days of judicial remand after his custody with the SIT in the second case concluded on Wednesday.
Video-Conference Proceedings Due to Security Concerns
Due to significant security concerns, Ashok Kharat was not physically produced in court. Instead, the entire legal proceedings were conducted via video-conference. The SIT formally requested the court's permission to arrest Kharat in the third case, which was originally filed at the Sarkarwada police station in Nashik.
Serious Charges in the Third Case
Police officials have disclosed that the third case involves grave allegations, including:
- Rape and outraging the modesty of a woman, charges that are punishable under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
- Violations under the Maharashtra Prevention of Black Magic Act.
The complainant in this case has also accused Ashok Kharat of additional serious offenses. These allegations include money laundering activities and using intimidation tactics, such as frightening people with toy snakes and tigers, to extort money from them.
Judicial Process and Re-Arrest Planned
Following the court's order, Ashok Kharat will be transferred to Nashik Road jail to serve his 14-day judicial remand. However, in a significant procedural move, police officials confirmed that he will be re-arrested at the jail premises in connection with the third case. This is part of the ongoing legal strategy by the SIT.
Ashok Kharat has been in custody since March 17, with the investigation uncovering multiple layers of alleged criminal activities. The SIT's persistent efforts highlight the complexity and severity of the cases against him, as they continue to build their investigation across different charges and complaints.
