Texas Tech Student Identified as Victim in Fatal Austin Bar Shooting

One of the two individuals killed in a late-night shooting at a popular Austin bar has been identified as 19-year-old Texas Tech University student Ryder Harrington. Authorities are actively investigating the violent attack as a potential act of terrorism, with federal agencies examining possible ideological motivations behind the incident.

Victim Was a Beloved Fraternity Member and Freshman

Ryder Harrington was among the two people fatally shot outside Buford's Backyard Beer Garden, located near the University of Texas at Austin campus, in the early hours of Sunday morning. His identity was confirmed by his father, Michael Harrington, during a brief phone conversation with authorities.

Harrington was a freshman member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity chapter at Texas Tech University, having joined the organization in the fall of 2024. In a heartfelt tribute posted online, the fraternity described him as a "beloved son, brother and friend whose kindness and presence touched countless lives."

"Ryder had a rare ability to truly enjoy life — to make people laugh, to make moments feel bigger, and to make ordinary days unforgettable," the message continued. "If anyone embodied what it meant to live fully and love deeply, it was Ryder."

A GoFundMe page established in his memory has already raised over $48,000 toward its $50,000 goal, demonstrating the widespread support from the community. A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Monday evening to honor his life.

His older brother, Reed Harrington, expressed profound grief on social media, stating it was "unfair, to say the least, that my little brother was only given 19 years on this earth."

Gunman Killed in Police Exchange After Targeting Patrons

The suspected gunman, identified by officials as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, was also killed at the scene following a shootout with responding police officers. Diagne was a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal and a former resident of New York City.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2 a.m. on 6th Street, a bustling nightlife strip in Austin, as the bar was preparing to close and hundreds of patrons were exiting the establishment. According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect's SUV was observed circling the block multiple times before he stopped and began firing from inside the vehicle.

Police reports indicate Diagne initially shot at patrons on the patio from his car window before exiting the vehicle and continuing to fire at people walking along the street. Officers engaged him within one minute of the first shots being fired and ultimately fatally shot the suspect during the confrontation.

Federal Authorities Investigate Potential Terrorism Nexus

Federal authorities are thoroughly examining whether the attack was ideologically motivated. Investigators revealed that a Quran was recovered from the suspect's vehicle, and he was reportedly wearing clothing featuring religious symbols, with possible connections to Iranian imagery.

"Obviously it's still way too early in the process to determine the exact motivation, but there were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism," stated Alex Doran, acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's San Antonio office, during a press briefing with reporters.

In total, fourteen additional individuals were injured during the attack, with three reported to be in critical condition at local hospitals. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Austin community and raised significant security concerns.

Community Response and Ongoing Investigation

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson offered sincere condolences to the victims and their families while praising the rapid response of law enforcement personnel. He emphasized that their swift action "definitely saved lives" during the chaotic incident.

As investigators continue working to determine the precise motive behind the shooting, the focus throughout Texas remains on mourning the tragic loss of a young life cut short by sudden violence. The community has rallied around the Harrington family, demonstrating resilience in the face of this devastating event.

The investigation remains active with multiple agencies collaborating to uncover all details surrounding the attack, including the suspect's background, potential radicalization, and any connections to broader ideological movements.
