Auto Driver Apprehended in Chandigarh After 15-Day Manhunt for Friend's Murder

The Industrial Area Phase-1 police in Chandigarh have successfully arrested an auto driver who had been evading capture for 15 days in connection with the brutal murder of his friend. The accused, identified as Vishal Mishra, aged 26, is a resident of Saini Vihar Phase-3 in Baltana, Zirakpur.

Details of the Murder Case

According to official police reports, a murder case was formally registered on January 29, 2026, following a complaint lodged by Prem Prakash Tiwari, a resident of Daria village. Tiwari informed authorities that both he and his younger brother, Arun Kumar Tiwari, aged 31, worked as auto drivers at the Chandigarh railway station.

The complainant detailed that on January 28, 2026, around 8 PM, a heated altercation erupted between Arun Kumar and Vishal at the railway station. Although the dispute was temporarily resolved, Tiwari noted that the accused had previously issued threats, indicating a history of tension between the two.

Fatal Incident at Daria Village Hotel

Later that evening, both men arrived at a hotel in Daria village in separate auto-rickshaws, each carrying passengers. Another argument broke out on the hotel's upper floor, escalating quickly. During this confrontation, Vishal allegedly seized a knife from the kitchen and launched a violent attack on Arun Kumar.

The injured Arun was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his wounds en route, marking a devastating end to the altercation.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Police officials stated that continuous raids and intensive efforts were conducted over the subsequent days to locate the absconding suspect. After a rigorous 15-day search, Vishal Mishra was finally apprehended. He was promptly produced in court, which granted a two-day police remand for further interrogation and investigation.

Authorities also revealed that Vishal had a prior criminal record, with a case registered against him in 2024 at the Sector-31 police station, adding context to his background and potential pattern of behavior.

This arrest underscores the Chandigarh police's commitment to resolving violent crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice, even in cases involving prolonged evasion. The community remains shaken by the incident, highlighting ongoing concerns over public safety and interpersonal conflicts among local workers.
