Bangladesh Pursues Diplomatic Extradition of Murder Suspects Arrested in West Bengal

Bangladesh Police have initiated diplomatic efforts to extradite two suspects arrested in West Bengal for the alleged murder of youth activist and former Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi. The suspects, identified as Faisal Karim Masud (37) and Alamgir Hossain (34), are currently in the custody of Bengal Police following their arrest by the Special Task Force (STF) in Bongaon.

Diplomatic Channels Activated for Repatriation

Inspector General of Bangladesh Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir confirmed on Monday that diplomatic channels are being utilized to bring the two suspects back to Bangladesh. Speaking at a media briefing at the police headquarters in Dhaka, Fakir stated that the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working on the repatriation process.

The Bangladesh deputy high commissioner's office in Kolkata had previously issued a note on Sunday, confirming that contact had been established with Indian authorities in Kolkata and consular access had been requested. This formal request marks a critical step in the extradition proceedings between the two neighboring countries.

Arrest and Custody Details

The Bengal STF arrested the two accused in the early hours of Sunday morning from Bongaon, a town near the India-Bangladesh border. Following their arrest, they were presented before a Bongaon court, which ordered their custody under the Foreigner's Act for 14 days. The STF had acted on "secret credible information" indicating that two Bangladeshi nationals had fled their country after committing serious crimes and had illegally entered India.

According to STF statements, there was specific intelligence that the suspects were attempting to take shelter in Bongaon with the intention of eventually crossing back into Bangladesh. The task force is now conducting intensive questioning to determine the identities of individuals or groups who may have assisted the accused in crossing into Indian territory.

Elaborate Escape Route and Investigation

Investigations reveal a complex escape route undertaken by the suspects following the alleged murder. According to STF and intelligence sources, after shooting Hadi in December last year, the accused fled Dhaka on a motorcycle. They subsequently changed vehicles five times before reaching the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh.

Under the cover of darkness, they allegedly evaded Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and crossed into Meghalaya. State intelligence reports indicate that the accused then traveled to multiple locations across northeastern India using various aliases, switching between buses and trains in northern India before eventually arriving in Bongaon.

Background of the Case

A murder case was officially filed with the Paltan police station in Bangladesh after Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in December of the previous year. Hadi, known for his activism and role as a former spokesperson for Inquilab Moncho, was a prominent youth figure whose death has drawn significant attention.

The extradition request comes amid ongoing investigations into whether the accused received assistance from individuals or organized groups during their cross-border movement. STF sources emphasize that determining the nature of this assistance is a priority for the investigation.

Note: The diplomatic process for extradition involves coordination between Bangladeshi and Indian authorities, with legal procedures under both countries' jurisdictions needing to be followed. The case highlights cross-border criminal investigations between neighboring nations and the mechanisms in place for handling such international legal matters.
