In a horrific incident in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a man allegedly threw acid on a woman and her family members after his marriage proposal was rejected. The attack occurred on Tuesday evening in the Subhash Nagar area, leaving three people critically injured.
Details of the Incident
The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar, had been pressuring the 22-year-old woman and her family to accept his marriage proposal for several months. When the family consistently refused, he allegedly decided to take revenge. On Tuesday, he arrived at the woman's home with a bottle of acid and threw it at her and her parents.
The woman, her mother, and her father sustained severe burns and were rushed to the district hospital. Doctors described their condition as critical, with the woman suffering burns on over 60% of her body. The father and mother also sustained significant injuries.
Police Response
Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police (City) Ravi Kumar, arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempted murder and acid attack. Police have formed multiple teams to apprehend the accused, who is currently on the run.
"We are conducting raids at possible hideouts and have alerted neighboring districts. The accused will be arrested soon," said SP Ravi Kumar.
Community Outrage
The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who staged a protest demanding strict action against the perpetrator. They also called for better security measures and support for acid attack survivors. Local politicians have condemned the attack and promised to ensure the family receives proper medical care and compensation.
This attack highlights the persistent issue of violence against women in India, particularly when they reject unwanted advances. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, cases of acid attacks have seen a slight decline in recent years, but incidents like this underscore the need for stricter enforcement of laws and community awareness.
The victims are currently undergoing treatment, and doctors are monitoring their condition. The family has appealed for justice and support from the authorities.
